"The Howardian Hills take their name from the Howard family who own land at Castle Howard. They form 79 square miles of well-wooded undulating countryside between the flat agricultural Vales of Pickering and York. The irregular 558 feet (170 m) high ridges of the Howardian Hills are a southern extension of the rocks of the Hambleton Hills in the North York Moors. Jurassic limestone and a network of pasture, extensive woodland, trees and woodland combine to create a strong visual character in the higher ground overlooking the agricultural plains below." says Wikipedia.
This shot shows gently undulating landscape, looking across the Great Lake at Castle Howard, towards Coneysthorpe Banks Wood. Due to the overcast sky, this shot doesn't show the area at it's best.
The Howardian Hills are defined as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and are a super area to explore on foot.
Beautiful landscape, and you have me thinking about what a family must own to have an entire area named for them. What a lovely place to be able to walk around.

This is a lovely area for a walk. Many of the walks are not very busy, so ideal for those who like a solitary outing. There are at least three long distance paths which pass through the area too.

I'm a keen rambler wherever there are interesting footpaths to explore, though sadly I don't gallop up hills as easily as I could when I was younger!
