Hutton-le-Hole is a small popular scenic village close to the southern edge of the North York Moors, and one of my favourite places to visit on a Moorsbus trip. Today it was our destination on a short 4 mile walk.
A beck runs through the heart of the village, with a large village green often occupied by sheep, although few could be seen today.
A little footbridge crosses the beck, and the stream is a popular place for children to paddle.
The village was mentioned in the Domesday Book (compiled in 1086AD) as Hoton. Since then it has been known as Hege-Hoton, Hoton under Heg and Hewton. The name Hutton-le-Hole means the 'place of the burial ground near the hollow', however, the full name it now caries only dates from the 19th century.
ooooh, I can't tell you how many times we have bought ice cream at the little shop there and eaten them wandering around this upsy-downsy green. We love it there! Super shot
I think that of all the villages on the North York Moors, Hutton-le-Hole is one of my favourites - you can expect more photos from here through the summer!
@casablanca You are right, it is the Ryedale Folk Museum. I have visited there several times, the last time being back in September, and I've no doubt that we will visit at some stage during the summer. Hutton-le-Hole makes a good place to finish some of our walks. On a day like this one with a short walk we aim to catch the 15.05 bus north over the moor tops to Danby before our return home. When we do a longer walk there is a bus at 17.12 from Hutton-le-Hole that takes us directly back to York. The green at Hutton-le-Hole is a lovely place to sit and watch the world go by while waiting for the bus.
Chatting to my daughter, because I was convinced I'd been here - and I guess it was on a bus trip when we were walking along the coast from Whitby to Scarborough and around Scarborough - and my daughter sprained her knee on the ups and downs to the streams, so we bused a section from Robin Hood Bay to Scarborough.
@shannejw You may well have visited here Shanne - Hutton-le-Hole is one of the moorland villages publicised in the coastal resorts. By service bus it's around an hour from Scarborough along the A170 road then a connection moorsbus from the main road north to the village. It's about 25 miles from the coast. There are also coach trips from the coast that have a stop here too.
