After my visit to Danby Moors Centre last Friday I caught a lunch time Moorsbus back to Pickering on the southern fringe of the North York Moors, with the intention of taking photos of some of the steam locomotives working on the preserved railway that runs north from Pickering to Grosmont.
This locomotive was one of a series of 115 built in the 1950s following the nationalisation of the railways in 1948. This example entered service early in 1957 and spent much of it's life working around Birmingham. After a working life of only 10 years it was withdrawn from service in 1967.and moved to a scrapyard at Barry in South Wales, but that wasn't the end of the story. It was bought from there by preservationists and restored to working order.
Here it has brought it's coaches into platform 1 on a southbound service and has been uncoupled to run past the coaches through platform 2 to couple to the opposite end ready for the 2pm run north.
Remembering the good old days. We don't have trains any more in Malta, when the bus service came into being the trains couldn't compete. But I am always impressed by these old trains. Got a trip on one once up to the top of Mount Snowdon in Wales.
On the two occasions my hubby and son have hiked the Coast to Coast, Grosmont has been a favourite stop. We all love steam engines and the workshop there gives you a good chance to watch the work up close. Nice picture.
Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, which put this shot on the Popular Page.
It's great to see these magnificent machines at work, and the line between Pickering and Grosmont is a demanding route for them. They also pass through beautiful scenery, including a deep gorge at Newtondale, so it is a super journey to take.
@peadar The first locomotive of this type was delivered in December 1952, and the final delivery was made in October 1957, so only 2 1/2 years before the final new steam locomotive was built for British Railways.
