The chapel is the only surviving roofed building in Pickering Castle, and was built about 1226. The castle had a resident chaplain until 1547 when all chantry chapels were closed under King Henry VIII. As it ceased to have a religious function, the chapel was used as a court room when the neighbouring New Hall became ruinous. The original stonework of small rubble can clearly be seen in this shot.
Today the chapel is used as a display space with information boards outlining the history and role of the castle.
Beautiful shot, stonework and timber roof. Some years ago in Scotland we booked a table at a restaurant and when we got there we found it to be an old chapel complete with altar. It was a bit uneasy in there and also because we were the only patrons at the time.

Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.
Although this building is complete, I suspect it might have been substantially restored at some point - particularly the roof.

Thank you Vesna. The information boards gave an interesting insight to the castle as well.
