Gormire Lake by fishers

Gormire Lake

Yesterday, Katharine and I walked south from Sutton Bank visitors centre towards the White Horse hill carving. Though impressive when seen from a distance, the white horse is very disappointing from close up. However, the walk is well worth doing for the spectacular views from the edge of the escarpment. It is only about 1 1/2 niles to get there, but takes quite a while witth regular pauses to enjoy the view.

Here Gormire Lake can be seen to the north-west of our location. The lake is a product of the last Ice Age, when a huge sheet of ice filled the Vale of York. As the ice began to melt, a river formed between the ice and the escarpment, creating a long channel past Sutton Bank. This is the only remnant of that channel that still carries water. It is the only natural lake within the North York Moors national park.

It is a place of mystery and legend and it is said to be a doorway into Hell. The woodland around and the lake itself are a nature reserve, and there is a nature trail within the site, but it involves a very steep hill down from the escarpment (and what feels like a much steeper hill on the way back!).

I was quite fortunate to get this shot, since low cloud at the beginning of the walk was only just clearing.

Other shots of the views along this escarpment were posted in July, including a different view of the lake from the north-east.

Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.

I had planned a lot more Moorsbus visits to the North York Moors during this summer, but sadly circumstances limited what we were able to do, which means I already have some visits planned ready for Moorsbus 2022. Hopefully the organisers will raise enough money for it to run next year.
