I've thought for a while that there must be a viewpoint in Pickering where the church tower / spire can be seen over the surrounding rooftops, and I spotted this from the top deck of a double decker bus as it was approaching our stop. We got off the bus and walked back to Pickering Bridge, over Pickering Beck. The viewpoint was bettr from the bus, but I thought this quite reasonable.
Rather surprisingly, as you follow the road uphill that runs past the church, it vanishes from sight. The church is surrounded by a graveyard, and that in turn is surrounded by quite tall shops and houses. Access to the church is along narrow alleys, so it isn't immediately obvious how to get to it.
It is worth taking the effort to find the church though, since it has one of the best displays in the country of medieval wall paintings. They were commissioned around 1450AD and created over the following ten years. They give a vivid insight into the beliefs of the people of that period.
interesting church with vivid insight into belief systems. Would love to learn more
Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.
For those interested in the medieval wall paintings, my next post is a collage of some parts of the display.
