A new short-term art trail has been created in the Museum Gardens in York city centre. Ten ghost-like figures have been placed around the gardens for visitors to discover. Nine of them were fairly easy for Katharine and I to find, but it took us a while to locate the last one.
The Viking warrior in this shot is one of the easiest sculptures to find, only a few yards inside the gardens when entering from the Museum Street entrance. They are created of metal mesh, so as you move around them they become more or less visible, in a ghostly way. You can see through them as well. It would be interesting to see how they look on a foggy day.
York was a Viking city for about 200 years. Following Viking attacks in the mid 800s AD, when the riches of the monasteries were often raided, and people were captured and taken as slaves back to Scandinavia, a major invasion took place in 866AD, and soon afterwards York became an important Viking centre, under the name ‘Jorvik’.
Today, many of the city centre streets still carry names of Viking origin, and impressive artefacts have been discovered and are on display in the Yorkshire Museum and the Jorvik Viking Centre. The Jorvik Viking Centre also has an impressive underground recreation of life in Viking York. So, the Viking warrior figure is a good reminder of a 200 year period of history when Vikings ruled in York.
Sorry for the late post, I've been with my brother sorting out some of my mums things at her bungalow and have only just got back to York.
Fav. A super work of art and the viking really looks like a ghost. Thank you for the history lesson. York is a stunning place to explore because of its long and interesting history.
That's a bit late to see them, since they are only on display until 7th November - however you will be in York for the Christmas Market which starts on 18th November.
great capture

Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.
Sadly, the sculptures are only on display until 7th November, and on the day we went they were very popular, with a lot of people looking for them.

You haven't much time to see them, since the display is only on until 7th November.

Thank you Vesna, I'm glad that you like them. It is just a shame that these are only on display until Sunday.
