This sculpture shares another aspect of Doncaster life that I wasn’t familiar with - links with the Mayflower when it sailed to North America.
The following notes are what are on display near the sculpture:
“The sculpture of the Pilgrim Woman was created by artist Rachel Carter to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower’s pioneering voyage to America.
The sculpture is made of bronze, and is based on a three dimensional photographic scan of the artist wearing traditional Tudor costume.
During research for the sculpture Rachel travelled to America on a cargo ship, seeking to copy the voyage of the Pilgrims on Mayflower. During her time in America she stayed in Provincetown and Boston, Massachusetts learning traditional First Nation skills like macramé.
On her return to this country she worked with around 100 women to create macramé panels, which were cast in bronze and included in the sculpture.
The sculpture is particularly relevant to Doncaster, as some of the Pilgrims came from this area, including William Brewster, from Scrooby and William Bradford, from Austerfield.”
MY summat new for today too. We take so much for granted, Donny is just - Donny. And now I have learnt through your adventures, about its car manufacturing past and the PIlgrim fathers. I knew about the Roman aspect of course and supposed links to Robin Hood. Thank you.
Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.
It's always nice to learn something new on my wanderings, and Danum Museum taught me quite a lot. In addition to the areas I've shown shots of, there is a regimental museum and a lot of other things about life in Doncaster. There is also an art galley that I didn't visit. Perhaps on a future trip?
The Pelgrims has a connection with Holland. They have lived in Delft some years before the moved to America.
