Another shot from my walk around York city centre yesterday to see the effect of the floods, and here you can see the situation at St Georges Field car park.
This car park is situated on low ground between the River Ouse and River Foss. The two rivers merge just south of the car park.
I can't remember a flood that I've photographed when there wasn't at least one vehicle stranded in the flood water here, and yesterday was no exception, with around 7 vehicles there.
While I was there a young couple waded through the water and managed to start their car and drove it out of the water. They were in part of the car park where water wasn't quite so deep. They then stopped on the access road to bail the water out. A TV film crew interviewed them. They were visitors to York and had left their car before the weekend and got quite a shock when they went to collect it.
The flood water is now beginning to receed, having reached a height of 4.58 metres above normal summer level, so quite a way below the record flood of 2000 when it reached a height of 5.4 metres above normal summer level. As far as I'm aware, all the flood defences worked as designed, although around 100 properties not behind defences are thought to have been flooded.
It has to be said that most of York and it's population is unaffected and life goes on as normal. But for those who live closest to the river it has been a worrying few days.
Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.
These three cars achieved fame on Monday evening by appearing on the news on ITV, the BBC and Sky, but that perhaps highlights the point that the effects of this flood were quite localised in York. The flood water is now receeding, so the recovery of these cars and the other two still there will soon be able to take place. The clean-up of the riverside areas can then begin. I have to say I'm pleased that we live far enough from the river for it not to directly affect us. I do feel sorry for those regularly flooded.
Thank you both. Latest information is that the river height is now about 1 metre below it's highest, so it won't be too long before it is contained within it's banks. Then there is the task of clearing up the silt and debris deposited in the areas that were flooded.
