...and then came the Floods! by fishers

...and then came the Floods!

Floods are not an unknown event in York. They are not even rare. The challenge for me is to try and find a different viewpoint to record them.

The Kings Arms on the right of this shot have featured in our project several times before, sometimes in the floods, sometimes not. The attractive old timber framed building is a magnet for film crews wanting to record the floods to show on TV news.

Our daughter Lucy spent some time working at the Visit York visitor centre one summer and was asked one day how to find the Kings Arms. They were very keen to have a drink there. Sadly, although Lucy could direct them to where they could see it, they would not have got a drink because it was closed due to flooding!

The Environment Agency are part way through a major update to the flood defences in the city which will include defending some areas not previously protected, but this riverside area will remain undefended.

Always a sense of deja vu in York, eh? You wonder who actually insures The Kings Arms!

Wow. That`s a lot of water. We got three storms, the biggest in 50 years. Gladly the are gone now.

Wow, so sad to see the damage flooding causes. Unfortunately I fear it will only get worse in the upcoming decades.

Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.

The flood is now past it's peak and the water is beginning to receed. I had another brief walk today to look at areas I hadn't looked at yesterday. If nothing else, after the horrible weather of the last week,the flooding did get me out of the house and exercising!

@casablanca

I doubt that the Kings Arms can get insurance against floods. The interior has been updated to make the clean-up quick and easy, and the cellar is actually on the first floor. In the past I've seen it reopen while flood water is still lapping over the cobbled area beside the river, which just shows how easy recovery has been made.

You have big trouble with weather, I'm sorry.

@bybri @vesna0210

Thank you both. We have had such a mixture of weather recently. Far more gales than I ever remember, rain and floods, and even some snow. Hopefully spring isn't too far ahead!
