Another shot from the collection that Katharine took in South Lincolnshire last weekend, and we are once again in Stamford, looking east along the River Welland from Town Bridge, with the river nicely reflectiong a sky of patchy cloud.
The river was one of the reasons for the founding of the town of Stamford, at a point where there was a ford over the river, which became known as 'Stoney Ford', later corrupted to Stamford. The small settlement here was founded over 2000 years ago, before the arrival of the Romans in Britain.
Under the Romans, Stamford found itself on a major road from London to the north, and for many centuries it was on a major south to north transport route. It was only in 1960 than the main south to north road bypassed Stamford on it's western side, and there was at least some relief from the traffic congestion.
The River Welland is a much loved Stamford amenity for residents and visitors alike, with the banks and adjoining meadows used by picnickers and anglers in the summer months. The historic Stamford Millstream, originally cut from the Welland before the Domesday Book, joins the Welland near the picturesque limestone Town Bridge; it is currently the focus of a community led restoration project.
Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated. Katharine was thrilled by the responses to her shot.
Stamford looks like a very interesting historic town, and I'm looking forward to having the opportunity to explore it myself at some point. Katharine certainly enjoyed her time there and wants to go back for another look!
