Between the railway station and the rear of York Minster, a short 15 minute walk, there are four war memorials. Not a complete surprise considering that York has always been an important military centre.
This display of crosses representing various veteran's associations is in a grassy area beside the Boer War memorial which commemorated the second Boer War of 1899 - 1902.
These crosses are a reminder that those who take part in war are changed by it, and many carry the damage (physical or mental) from a war for the rest of their lives.
Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.
It is interesting to see the variety of ways that Remembrance takes place, but the most important thing is that it does. Perhaps we might eventually realise that war isn't a great answer to problems between countries.
