Perhaps the most attractive setting for a war memorial in the York area, this is the Kohima Memorial in Dean's Park, on the north side of York Minster.
The stone arcade is a remnant of an archbishops palace built on this site in the late 12th century. In 1987 this remnant of arcade wall was restored and dedicated to the memory of 1400 allied soldiers who died in the Battle of Kohima in 1944. Kohima (in the north-east of India) was the first land battle where the Japanese army were defeated, and was a turning point in the war in the far east.
In sharp contrast to the horror of the battle, the memorial is in a lovel peaceful setting in parkland, looking particuarly nice with autumn colours in the trees.
Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.
Dean's Park is a nice relatively quiet open space, a lovely setting for such a memorial. There are also fascinating views of the north side of the Minster, so it's a great place for a break from the hustle and bustle of York city centre.
The autumn colours and arches make this area so special
