The Merchant Adventurers Hall was one of three different guild halls that we visited during the York Residents. The second hall we visited was the Merchant Taylors Hall. Once again it was an impressive building, but not on the scale of the Merchant Adventurers Hall.
However, rather than show you the building itself, I thought I would share these attractive small pieces of stained glass in a collage, which shows some of the tools of the tailors trade. From top left to bottom right we have an iron, scissors, bobbin of thread and needle, and a tape measure and thimble.
I've never noticed these details of the building before. They are set in predominantly plain glass in the entrance hall and are easily missed. I have to confess I didn't spot them this visit - Katharine did.
Reminds me of my dad. He was a tailor by trade and he was well known in Sliema. I remember him working with those tools except for the timble in the picture which was for the ladies; men's timbles were the same but open at the top. I have a scissors of his which is exactly like the one in the picture.
Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.
It was surprising how much we discovered during our Residents Weekend tour, even though all the places that we visited were places that we had been to previously.
