Another church interior, but very different to Beverley Minster that I shared yesterday. Holy Redeemer is a relatively modern church situated on Boroughbridge Road in the Acomb area of the city. It was built between 1959 and 1965 to a design by George Pace.
It replaced an earlier church, built in 1938, which was a simple brick building and which is now used as the church hall.
Although a modern design, mainly built of brick and concrete, it does incorporate stonework from St Mary's Church, Bishophill Senior, which was demolished shortly before this church was built, the most impressive part being this stone arcade and a Norman arch which forms the entry into the church and dates from around the late 12th century. This arcade dates partly from around 1200AD and partly from the late 13th century.
The oldest stones in this building are fragments of carved stones which date back to Saxon times and which include examples of cross fragments.
So a modern church that pays homage to a very long history of churches in York.
Suspended between the arches are a series of photos, some recent, and some showing the building of the church.
