Not a bug I wish to meet

Update: this is a giant water bug, also known as a "toe biter". It's about 2 inches long. Apparently their bites deliver a wallop, but are "not medically important," by which I am given to understand that you wouldn't die, just experience pain.
That looks like a stink bug. UGH... Nice close up though.
