It's Fiesta time in San Antonio! Fiesta San Antonio is a spring festival held annually since the late 19th century. The festival began as a single event to honor the memory of the battles of the Alamo and San Jacinto. In 1891 local women decorated carriages, baby buggies and bicycles with live flowers, met in front of the Alamo, and threw the blossoms at one another. That was the first Battle of Flowers Parade, which later became an annual event. Today there are more than 100 Fiesta events including three major parades, cultural & musical events, and a carnival. Fiesta San Antonio . . . our extravagant 11-day citywide party! Along with Fiesta, we are also celebrating our Spurs basketball team being in the NBA playoffs . . . definitely a citywide party atmosphere currently in San Antonio.
For anyone not familiar with cascarones shown in the photo . . . they are decorated, confetti-filled eggshells crushed over a person's head to shower him or her with confetti. They are prominent here in San Antonio during our Fiesta time and also during Easter time.
This is such a wonderful capture with the decorative colour in the back, the reflections in the foreground and those wonderfully bright eggs. I never knew about the festival but I have visited San Antonio - whilst visiting friends in Texas many years ago. Really lovely Gayle.
How fun and colorful. We need to go one year. My wife told me how decorated everything is on the Riverwalk right now when she was there this past weekend. Fav!
@helenhall Thank you for your comment and fav, Helen! How wonderful that you visited Texas and San Antonio! I hope to one day visit your neck of the woods! :-)
@365projectorgjenfurj Thanks so much for your comment and fav, Jen! Usually the opening is large enough to drop the confetti in by hand but I have used a small piece of paper rolled up like a funnel if the opening was extra small. :-)
@genealogygenie Thank you so much for your comment and fav, Kim! Definitely let me know when you visit San Antonio . . . I would love to meet a fellow 365er! :-)
