I looked out the kitchen window this morning and noticed this young buck rubbing and scraping his antlers against a century plant. You can see some of the damage to the century plant in the photo. They usually do this rubbing and scraping against trees. I read online that bucks do this to remove the velvet from their antlers and it usually occurs from early fall into winter. Deer also rub and scrape trees during the mating season to attract females or to mark their territory, warning other males to stay away. We currently have several trees with broken branches and torn tree bark due to this rubbing and scraping activity.
