As I commented in my May 14th posting, most of the adult birds are now bringing their youngsters with them when they come to visit the feeders. Yesterday I spotted this young female cardinal hopping around under the feeders. The young cardinals do have a crest although not fully filled in. The easiest way to pick out a young cardinal is to check out the beak. Instead of the bright orange beak of both adults, a young cardinal's beak is dark, almost black.
