This was my attempt to darken the background by under exposing the sky behind the leaves and then using flash to illuminate the leaves. This was probably the most successful but, boy, do I need to work on this and understanding flash and fill-flash photography.
you are not alone in needing to learn a lot. I only have inbuilt flash which always brings disastrous results. Well done for giving it a go and the results show that you did know what you were doing.
@helenhall thanks for your encouragement...I think good results was as much luck as knowledge...some came out totally dark, others harshly lit....flash is a mystery to me!
This turned out really well! You will be a pro with flash in no time!
I have used flash a few times when I absolutely needed to in dark rooms during concerts and such. I found it to be useful.
I have never used it in situations like this since I really do not know what I am doing! I do know how to use a tripod and adjust shutter speed if necessary so that is what I usually stick to.
@farmreporter Thanks for your comment about working with flash...I keep using it and then totally forgetting how! I just think of it as another tool in the tool kit that I'd really like to master so just I can if I want to! And it's easier to port around than a tripod! I also use the tripod more for slow shutter speeds and those effects and think the flash has some other "artistic" possibilities... beyond me at the moment
@helenhall Talking about flash, it just seems there are so many ways to use it other than just light when it's too dark...fill flash, rear-sync, front-sync etc...Just more to learn!
