This beautiful Grade 1 listed medieval church is in the next village to ours & I pass it every time I go shopping to Garstang. There has been a church on this site since the 13th century & this one was built in the 15th century. I will show more photos at another time as it is well worth seeing!
St. Michaels is a lovely village with a great community feel to it. Beside the church is the River Wyre which I have mentioned before as this river is the boundary to our fields. The river was very prone to flooding at one time & the village used to flood badly.
There is a flood basin in place now in Garstang which comes into operation at high tides.
You might also remember this village in connection with a tragedy about 25 years ago when the villagers went to inspect a flood chamber at Abbeystead & methane exploded killing several villagers.
There are many graves in this church yard belonging to these local people that were killed.
@louisefrance Have just checked up on Google & it was 1984 & 16 died as a result of that disaster. My sister was due to get married in the May & one of the victims was going to give her away instead of our dad who had died !
@happypat Thanks for looking up more info. In 1984 I was a student and didn't have a TV so that explains why I don't remember it. Your family connection makes it even sadder.
what beautiful old stonework! love these old structures with so much history. most everything here is so new by comparison. btw, cabo is the southern tip of what is called Baja California but is really part of Mexico. :)
Beautiful stones and colours. Was that Pat Seed's husband in that accident - I remember that well and it was awful - such an innocent trip - just the sort of thing I would go on and just never expect such a deastating outcome.
@happypat I remember the whole Pat Seed campaign very well. My wonderful history teacher, Mrs Roach, had a young daughter in the school battling leukaemia at the time and sold a lot of 'One in a Million' badges. It seemed monumentally unfair when Geoff Seed was killed. I just read the thread - I'd forgotten it was as many as 16.
@judithg 8 Died straight away & the others died from burns mostly in the weeks to follow. Abbeystead of course is such a little place in beautiful country side & it seemed so unreal at that time.
