Our new hens. by happypat

Our new hens.

We have been to Happy Chicks this afternoon to buy two new hens. The darker one in the front is a Cuckoo Maran & the pale hen at the back is a Bluebell.
We left them in a cage in the Landrover & have just been out to perch & ring them. It is better to leave them until dark, put them on the perches & when they all wake up in the morning the other hens seem to accept them better.
We now have one cockerel & eight hens.
They don't look too bothered by finding themselves somewhere different and they make a handsome pair! (I don't know if I should call female birds handsome but I think they are handsome rather than pretty!)

How fascinating! When you buy ( or receive :) )eggs in a box you give so little thought to the colourful characters who lay them!

Ooh that cuckoo maran looks interesting. What colour eggs do you get from these girls? I think it's hilarious that if they wake up with someone new all is well with the world!

They have lovely markings. I wonder what the other chickens think come morning with the new arrivals about. Is there a pecking order?

I love this shot. The colors are great and the hens' feathers go well with the rusted bits of the cage.

Very nice shot. Wonderful colors. We lived in farm country, at one point, and I can still taste fresh eggs.

over here, there used to be a slogan: "Brown eggs are local eggs and local eggs are FRESH."... a little jingle that stays with you! There is nothing like a fresh egg...
