Spring Work 4 by happypat

Spring Work 4

Silage time on the farms round here. The grass is mown, left to wilt for a few hours & then collected in large trailers, taken back to the farm & packed into a holding bay. It is then rolled to get all the air out & covered with plastic sheeting.
This silage is then used to feed cattle in the winter time, mostly dairy cows in this region.

I am out tonight at a Lady Farmers AGM so might have to catch up with comments later !
Thank you all for all your comments & faves your input & the comradeship is wonderful !
I didn't know how silage was made, so I've just learnt something else from 365! A lovely view nicely framed by the wildflowers in the foreground.

I really like the blues and greens in this photo. Lovely composition, too, with the little flowers on the right.

Lady Farmers - magnificent! So how come it doesn't all rot if it isn't dried first - presumably the 'getting the air out' part is critical?

That's all finished here and our NZ cattle and sheep are looking forward to it this winter! Lovely rural and green scene! Presumably it has stopped raining?

@judithg Got it in one Judith !!!!

@maggiemae Yes but I think it's funny because your farmers & my sons out there eat your silage in the summer when the grass is in short supply whereas we here feed the silage i the long winter when the stock is inside!

That's interesting Shirley. The silage around here, is rolled and wrapped in the paddocks where it is cut. Sometimes the rolls are stacked and sometimes they seem to just sit in the paddock. I love this photo with the wild flowers in the foreground, lush green grass, mountains and magnificent sky. It is awesome.

@murnane Yes we have what they call big bales too & that is wrapped in the fields ..much more portable but for bigger numbers of stock in one building its cheaper to do it in one stack !

Lovely field capture ... a real "working farm" here. The composition is always so perfect in your photos, Pat. You always have the perfect pov and comp with beautiful framing. You take such care, I think, to really "see" your photo before you capture it. Wonderful work.
