Turning the sheep. by happypat

Turning the sheep.

I had seen these sheep in the fields & was lucky enough to be there as the farmer rounded them up with his quad bike.
I stood with the farmers wife who was in her slippers...how many times have I done that, called out of a warm kitchen when in the middle of doing something to stand in some gateway with a stick turning cows!!!
I told her about 365 & as most people are was quite interested but I expect her husband wondered what was going on...press or something!!
This farm was up beyond Scorton with Harrisend Fell in the background.

Three good things:
1.Morrinsons custard yoghurts.
2.Bubble wrap.
3.The fire on in the middle of the afternoon.
Great capture, I remember a time Having to go out in my pjs to round up some cattle the worst part was getting stung by nettles .

@ruthmouch Wonderful quote Ruth....happy memories!!!
March 14th, 2013
I thought sheepdogs did this. What is the world coming to.
March 14th, 2013
@sabresun I agree!! What a wonderful sight and obviously happy memories for a lot here!! Custard yogurt?!!
March 14th, 2013
@sabresun @fannyb The dog was working hard & have photos to prove , perhaps tomorrow!! you can't see him/her here but as they came round the corner she was sitting on the back of the bike.

Great photo - nice to share stories and projects with folk!
Do you think she will be a new recruit?
March 14th, 2013
Lovely black faced sheep! Going quite fast round this corner! Our farmer friend always rounded up his sheep with the bike and no dogs! Bubble wrap? Got tons - always keeping it for something! Love the hedge and the gate in this picture!
March 14th, 2013
oo they've got a bit of a rush on those sheep. They look like Swaledales but that doesn't seem right for your area. Any idea what they are?
March 14th, 2013
Wonderful capture. Really beautiful.
March 14th, 2013
Beautiful photo. Lovely looking area.
March 14th, 2013
Great way to meet people and I know where your coming from going out in your slippers on a farm
March 14th, 2013
@fueast Have asked Harry & he says they are Lonks. A breed of sheep native to the Pennines & North of England. They are used meat & wool for carpets apparently!
March 14th, 2013
@happypat Never heard of them! Will google.
March 14th, 2013
OK - not sure of I dare quibble but they have the same white spectacles as Swaledales whereas Lonks seem to have white patches on the nose. I am bringing in @meisen325 for transatlantic arbitration if she's still out there.
March 14th, 2013
Great capture. Love the motion in the sheep running.
March 14th, 2013
@fueast He he very wise but not seen @meisen325 for a while unfortunately!
March 14th, 2013
@fueast @happypat HI!!!!! I'm here!!!! Well, not really here here as you can see from my lack of posting and commenting. I miss you all terribly but taking a rest from the world of 365. I needed a break from the pressure and time to pay attention to other things. Been lurking around occassionally and glad I did today - I must have heard a loud BAAAAH coming my way, haha!! Those sheep are Rough Fells!
March 14th, 2013
@meisen325 But what about the white spectacles? Patt I think you'll have to nip back tomorrow and ask.
March 14th, 2013
@fueast Oh damn, I missed those . You were correct, then - Swaledales they are. I'm losing my sheep mojo.
March 14th, 2013
Wonderful country feel to this shot.
March 14th, 2013
@meisen325 Ah well you are the best sheep knower there is on 365 Monica!!! Delighted to see you are keeping tabs on us too, hope you are back now & again when you feel like it!!! We do miss you though & the life of a Washington correspondent!
March 14th, 2013
@fueast Well done Alison you are a true Northern girl!!! Not much good on sheep......not our forte!
March 14th, 2013
Amazing those skinny little legs hold them up!! Good action shot. I am clueless about sheep, but am betting those red stripes aren't part of their natural markings!
March 14th, 2013
What a wonderful capture, Pat. It's how I imagine your countryside. About the red stripe? - Is that natural? And bubble wrap? You must have something fragile to ship.
March 14th, 2013
Lovely country shot!
March 14th, 2013
This is a wonderful shot. But as a city girl I have to ask - why do they have the red stripes. Looks like somebody took a can of spray paint to them.
March 14th, 2013
@cdonohoue So the farmer can identify them as his Cathy. Farmers have different marks & colours. If they escape into the next farmers fields, which is a regular occurrence, the farmer knows they are his.
March 14th, 2013
@happypat Thanks, Pat. I figured that was what it was but thought I better ask.
March 14th, 2013
Super shot Pat, reminders of home!
March 15th, 2013
An amazing capture, and I am surprised the 4 wheeler doesn't scatter them instead
March 15th, 2013
What super sheep. We rarely have black faced sheep here
March 15th, 2013
Very interesting shot--especially to this city dweller.
March 15th, 2013
Great capture of a country scene Pat. I miss the dogs and whistles though.
March 15th, 2013
Nice action Pat. The company I went to today names all its offices after breeds of sheep - most I'd never heard of!
March 15th, 2013
And they're off, and on the run to the first fence, Larry the Lamb has a slight lead over Sean the sheep.....great shot.
March 16th, 2013
Great shot Pat, lve the movement you have captured. Loving the sheep identification debate too!
March 17th, 2013
great sheep shot - very rural country scene!
