live our hens, one cockerel & seven, used to be eight hens.
Quite a large patch of grass where they can roam around as they wish.
Some of it is very uneven as in hot weather they like to make a dust bath to dust there wings...they wriggle around until they get comfy & sunbathe.
This year with all the rain the grass has got quite long so Harry has strimmed the top end so they can walk better& don't get there little legs tangled up.
Three good things:
1. A wet day so we have been sitting in front of the TV all afternoon watching Wimbledon.
2. My friend is home from holiday ...I have missed her!
3. A long talk to a very chatty Max this morning.
Looks like a lovely hen run. Handsome cockerel too. Hope he is kind to his ladies. Angus just strimmed the chicken run, ours if more full of thistles and nettles though. The chickens were completely un-bothered by the strimmer and he was worried that he was going to strim them.
How come your chickens still have grass? Ours have turned their run into mud and dust!! Lovely shot of a very handsome cockeral and a pretty ?maran. Lucky chocks id say.
@lucypics Cuckoo Maran I think Lucy or it could be a bluebell not just sure until I see them all together & I have forgotten which this is...the ground does get muddy a bit in the winter specially round the cabin but now the grass is longer it stands the rain much better.
@jantan He is very kind & protective to his ladies & watches you like a hawk when you go in the gate...some nettles in ours too, not seen in this picture! You can see the hens in the corner but they weren't too worried really.
Great chicken shots. Their heads move so much I find I have to have a fast shutter speed to stop them being blurred!
My favourite chicken died a few days ago I'm a bit sad as she was a real character, an escapee, always walking up the road or coming to see what I'm doing.
I'm with @lucypics - not much edible greenery left in our run (apparently they don't like nettles), I won't be showing them this picture!! Really pretty hens. Does the cockerel get access to the hens or is he 'next door'?
@judithg Oh he lives with them all Judith, he waits outside the little pooper hole until they all come out ....all present & correct & then watches over them all day!!
@judithg He he well they are out of sight down a hill so he could be at it all the time as far as I know! always looks very fit & there are seven of them!!!!
