For the last few days there has been an odd smell like something cooking....well there was some hay cooking in next doors barn!
Four fire engines & a back up truck arrived at 6.45 am this morning.
Only 59 bales of hay stashed in the corner of the barn but they were the large big bales & they heat up so easily....apparently it usually takes six weeks for them to heat up enough to get on fire.
All was well in the end but when they pulled the hay apart it was spread all over in a blackened smoky layer. Its has been taken to a pit in one of the field where it still smokes.
!9 cups of tea required!!
Three good things:
1. Nobody burnt.
2. George next door has built me a new tower for the office computer .....14,000 photos on the hard drive he said....I will be able to go through them all now & delete all the 365 photos I have taken & never used!!
3. News travels fast across the world...Brian in NZ rang me an hour after the fire engines arrived wanting to know if we were on fire!! Plus a B&B in Cumbria rang to see if we were alright!
Wow! Hay fires are so scary because you never know when they will ignite.
So glad no one was hurt - it could have been worse.
Nice collage of the day's events.
So glad it wasn't any worse - quite a panic though I imagine. I am still chuckling over your 14000 unused images - makes me feel much better because I don't have quite that many but not so far off!! This digital photography business is so time-consuming - how ever long would it take me to delete them all?
So sorry to hear about your neighbours hay bales -so much waste -but glad no one was hurt The Smell must still linger especially after it was spread to douse !!Hope you were able to keep the smell out of your house --here;s me being all practical minded !!
Out of the devastation you have created a super collage on the events of the day !
Thank you all so much & yes we are all OK if a bit smoky round here!!
I am in the office now as my computer is back so just off to watch Masterchef ...I will continue to comment after that!
How did NZ know of this fire before you told them? How strange! Good thing it was discovered! I make a habit of deleting at least 3 photos every day but need to get even more destructive!
nice three things Pat how thought full for the phone callls your poor neighbours bale of hay going up like that at least no one was Injured or suffered from smoke or actually inhaled it.
Does hay just heat up until it spontaneously combusts then? I'm a town girl in case you hadn't guessed! Great collage which really tells the story well.

Sorry again for the mass reply but have been on the phone for last hour.
NZ knew because Brians friend who lives across the river texted him which was a little silly as it worried him so he rang to see if we were Ok. Hay when packed tight like this in large bales heats up & spontaneously combusts as Sue said...much more of a problem with these large bales that the small bales we had years ago.
Thank you all for your concern!
You know you hear about that all the time, and unless you've actually put your hands in between some of those bales that are stacked on top of each other, you do not realize how hot they get.
Oh my goodness...I imagine that could have been so much worse. I'm so glad the barn didn't catch on fire and no one was injured. Was that hay that had been stored for winter feed? I suppose that was a hefty monetary loss. Good job with the photojournalism, Pat!
