A tight squeeze

The fairy steps between Arnside & Beetham is on the coffin route. Arnside has no church of its own so the dead used to be brought out of their houses feet first & carried along the coffin route down the fairy steps to the church at Beetham.
As you can see the steps are very narrow & some of us had trouble getting up them!
Apparently the coffins used to be lowered down by rope.
I will be absent from the computer tomorrow as I have a short overnight visit to London.
A bit short of time at the moment as I seem to have a lot on but normal service will be resumed in November when everything slows down.

Three good things:
1. A lovely evening meal at Cathys house tonight which I haven't had to cook myself.
2. A dress shortened & she only charged me £6.
3. My stiff neck from last night is not as bad as I thought it would be.
Fascinating story. I followed a coffin route in the Lakes once - wish I could remember its name. Glad you made it through!

So sad to think of how common death was that a passageway would be given the name the coffin route. It's a very interesting scene!
