I walked to the village this afternoon to buy some sausages, post two parcels & get some ham. My B&B wants a packed lunch instead of the cooked part of her breakfast, she is on an obedience course at Myerscough college. Not her I hasten to add, she has two Jack Russels.
My doctor B&B arrived quite late last night but I didnt ask him about Harry's knee @judithg as he was the founder of Healthy Working Lives believing that worklessness rather than disease is the major cause of morbidity & mortality!
A lovely chap, he was charming but obviously believed in no slacking!
Three good things:
1. Backpacks to put sausages in!
2. Am loving all the fruit & veg I am eating ...really into a healthy diet at the moment!
3. All the lovely chit chat on my bookcase post yesterday.....I love replying to all comments if I can & it was just lovely to hear all your memories about books, your mums & generall family details...thank you all!
@sharrystar@quietpurplehaze
Thank you both, this is our little village veg shop. It took ages to get off the ground when she first opened but now everyone uses it thank goodness.
@seanoneill thank you Sean....I have come to the conclusion that shopping locally is the thing,....perhaps everyone is getting the message & that's shy supermarkets aren't doing as well! There was a queue...I took this from the hip! Could be a bit sharper.
I do think veggies and fruit in baskets looks twice as nice as in wooden boxes! They are well lit in this interesting little shop with its stone wall just outside! I didn't think Jack Russells were capable of obedience!
Well I hope he's not suggesting that Harry's knee would still be fine if he hadn't retired! It's really hard to keep a veg shop going I think as it's no good if the turnover isn't high. I should try to shop at the farm shop down the road a bit more - it's good value - a new resolution! And I could feed three of us on one halal chicken breast at £4/kilo!
@seanoneill Bryers getting your support? Me and the boys LOVE their chocolate treats. Need a mini mortgage compared to when they choose a gingerbread man from Birds though....
Knew this was yours Pat. I do enjoy seeing the snippets of your life. Our local shop is a village ran business but is now a spar but it supports village events a lot and has grown and developed over the years. Though NO ONE who has any history in the village calls it the spar its called the paper shop which it started out as, my boys call it the paper shop as that's what daddy knew it as when he was growing up.... On Sunday night after tea when the boys ask whats for pudding fairly often its a paper shop trip for chocolate and a chat with the lady who is in and a watch from behind the counter at the cctv cameras Sammy is obessed with! Sorry very long ramble.
@judithg younare right Judith the returns are very low...mind you veg & fruit have got much more expensive lately! A very hard life horticulture....they earn every cent they make. Ours is busy now thank goodness but there was a time when it must have been struggling, it helps when there is a pretty girl behind the counter....Harry does most of the shopping here!
@maggiemae ha ha you could be right perhaps that's why she is going...haven't heard a peep out of them yet!alex had a large table in the middle of her shop but I noticed today she has the middle section lower & it's amazing how more attractive it look. The baskets do look nice, better than wire ones.
@happypat haha - marketing - my friend was telling me that the Oxfqm shop is doing very well since a handsome man started managing it. Lots of ladies donating their husband's suits!
@newbank lovely long ramble, I'm good at that too! Your spar sounds a typical village shop......we have a nisa shop but everyone calls it Derek's. That is village life & by golly we should fight for it with everything we have got! A big supermarket wouldn't let your Sammy go behind the counter!
What a colourful shot, my mouth was wearing just looking at it all. Nice that it. Is supported. Place where people can bump into each and chat is so good in a village. We have just lost the last village shop which was part of the post office, that is still open for half a day for now.
A beautiful country feel to this fruit and vegetable shop -- reminds me of our local farmer's produce shop (approx. 5 miles away hence tend to use the shops on the doorstep ) which I like to frequent at special times eg Christmas or if I am out that way , They also have their produce in wicker baskets and the shopping baskets are identical to these ! A really nice shot Pat !
@beryl Thank you Beryl.......all these comments mean a lot. Hard to make a veg shop look good sometimes, it helps that it's a very attractive looking small shop with character.
It would be easy to find your 5 a day at this delightful little shop. Wonderful shot of the lovely produce and the shopper filling his basket. I love shopping at our local farmers market.
It's good to see a proper shop rather than a supermarket. We sometimes go Showjumping at Myerscough (when I say we, Ellen actually does the Showjumping. I just drive, pay and act as groom). We should be there next Saturday.
What a lovely post - everything so positive and glowing with light (except for the doctor of course) I love how your post reflects your day - living in the country sounds so much more interesting!
@dh oh really Delena....I am only ten minutes from there....if you get time we could meet for a coffee. You could come here if you don't have to stay with her all the time.
@barrowlane well we never did Rob as we used to have cattle & our own dogs. I am selective & only let digs stay if they have their own bed or cage preferably or sleep in the car. I don't mind so much when the digs are here for competitions of a doggy nature. I get quite a few in October for the gun dog trials, they are pretty much set up in their vehicles. Not too keen on ordinary pets ....sounds bad but some dogs are better trained than others!
The produce and the whole shop looks very inviting. I like the little window, and the way the light plays around it, off to the left too. It's rather charming.
Thank you both, this is our little village veg shop. It took ages to get off the ground when she first opened but now everyone uses it thank goodness.
Thank you all for your lovely comments.......much appreciated!
