I was surprised to see our usual Thursday market along the High Street in Garstang today.
I hardly saw one customer except here at the fish van. This fish van comes to Great Eccleston on a Wednesday too but I never buy my fish off there because I feel I should support the local fish shop that is local & pays the rates in Garstang. She does keep busy though. Oh I’ve just noticed it’s a man today...that is unusual!
I felt sorry for the stall holders who have taken the trouble to set out their wares & hardly a customer in sight. Perhaps it will be better next week when other shops are open but I doubt it. Usually you can’t walk along this street for people!
Three good things:
1. A walk with my friend two metres apart.
2. Fish & chips from the chippy for the first time for months. I had to queue in the rain though!
3. Glad to sit inside this afternoon & read my book. Not a nice day!
Agreeing with the above.
A chilly day here, but I got a heartwarming e-mail from our local library: it's open! One day a week and with restrictions. So happy!
@gijsje Oh wow, if you’re open we might be soon too though libraries are never mentioned in any update...can’t be just me that wants them open! Will be last I expect because of where the books might have been in people’s homes!
@louannwarren@julzmaioro@carolmw Well it was probably in the local paper which we do t get as we live seven miles away from Garstang...I think people aren’t going out much shopping, only for necessary food.
It seems to be the same way everywhere. It is heartbreaking to see so many going under. We try to support the local businesses that are having the most problems.
We've had hoards of visitors at Paimpont, largely I suspect from Rennes, Brittany's capital...a mere 35 minutes away. We've never seen so many this early in the season, arriving at 9 am with 3 generations of family! Paimpont isn't geared for such influx. This week has been better...LockDown unpicked, people back to work. Sounds good...although there is a now a spate of Public Holidays that generally are the precursor to visitors. Of course social distancing is impossible to enforce, meanwhile parking is vexing for one and all.
OK, l’ve had my whinge...I feel better already ;-)
Shame for the stall holders to have so few customers - l but it can only get better ( think positive ! ) Our market was open again this week , apparently the market hall was quite empty of both stallholders and customers - but more of both on the outside market ! and of course the weather is against everything !
@essiesue Yes we have stayed local too Sue...the furthest we’ve been is seven miles to our local marker town here....I get my tea bags & a few other things from the cash & carry but it’s near Blackpool_ I’m not going anywhere near there!
@beryl No it’s not weather to be wandering around outside is it Beryl.....not that cold but after all the gorgeous weather we’ve had lately we’ve got spoilt!
Looks like other market stalls are operating too. All our markets have been closed during lockdown.
I wouldn't fancy buying fish off a stall like this in Australia, a combination of heat and flies and produce being on display all day would put me off.
I didn’t realise you lived 7 miles away! Not just down at the corner like Coro St! You do want to support local! Even here some cafes and restaurants only get one couple per night
@maggiemae We live one mile away from Great Eccleston & the place we shop locally....you can get everything you need there but for bigger supermarket shops, shoe shops, clothes, gifts etc we go to Garstang. The banks are there too. I used to love a trip to Manchester or even Preston but these days we like the smaller places. Garstang is a small market town & very compact.
Lovely and sad at the same time. Last Monday was our first day out after being locked inside since the beginning of March. It was a lovely feeling but we were a bit scared from other shoppers and there were only a handful of them.
