There has been a general consensus that the lockdown has been very unfair on some businesses.
Supermarkets selling non essential clothes, books etc yet small private clothes boutiques & bookshops, stationers etc etc have to close. Hairdressers & beauty salons who have spent lots of money yet have to shut but garden centres selling all sorts of Christmas stuff can stay open....
In protest quite a few dress shops have turned their clothes mannequins around showing the general public their backs.....I can feel their frustration.
Three good things:
1. Hary & I chatted to five lots of people on our walk this afternoon....a gift of a Rice Krispie cake to eat on our way round too!
2. I also had a friend come to the front door with a card & some flapjack & a fruit loaf!
3. Reading a mind opening book called The World I Fell Out Of by Melanie Reid.
A journalist who writes for the Times Magazine it’s the autobiography of her life after she was paralysed after falling from her horse.
The stuff we know nothing about & cannot visualise about that first year in the Spinal Unit in Glasgow is mind blowing!
We are only a second away from disaster....a fall or slip, an accident or injury & it’s disaster!
Made Harry I thankful we have moved to one level I can tell you!
I agree - there does not seem to be any thought put into the lockdowns. It is the same here in Canada.
It seems that there is a global push to put smaller businesses out of business and have the bigger conglomerates amalgamate as well as have the internet giants like Amazon gain a monopoly.
Not a pretty future in my mind!
So many people are really suffering as a result of these lockdowns. I hate not seeing friends and family but it's a small price to pay compared to so many people.I count my blessings everyday.
I totally agree. Amazon will be rubbing their hands in glee at people (including me) who are ordering online because there isn't enough time to get to the shops again when they open in December before things need posting abroad to relatives and friends.......provided we open up from Lockdown on time, of course. My local council sent out a note yesterday suggesting if our local numbers don't come down, we won't come out of it here. I could scream! All those small local businesses that desperately need the income in November and December are losing it all to online shopping and the supermarkets. Painful painful times and the big teller on businesses is the quarterly rent payments, which are due on 24th of the month........Christmas Eve is always one such. How many will survive to January? I ache......
@farmreporter@thistle01@casablanca I agree with all that had been written here. My sister and I having the same conversation today! Heartbreaking for the small shops and obscene all those garden centres and supermarkets making a killing with non-essential goods! How fair is that?
It almost scares me more than the virus sometimes...I can’t imagine having to watch your business you’ve slaved over just crumble away to have to close it...so much worry & money problems to come.
I think Boris will dare not extend the lockdown....hope he makes his own mind up & do what he alone thinks is best!
I don’t understand. Allow all businesses open under the same regulation and let people MANAGE THEIR RISK not the govt forcing closures. Got that off my chest.
I think the small businesses would have closer contact amongst people than the larger supermarkets where you can do the 2 metre distance more easily. Its tough on the small businesses but after all this is a world shattering event!
@maggiemae The smaller shops only allow a couple in at once maggie...even our very small greengrocers is open with no plastic sheet between & seems no precautions at all ...it makes me mad! It should be law at least to put up a screen!
I am heartbroken for the businesses who had to close. It is so unfair, it really is. My friend Catherine lived in a two story apartment and always laughed at me when I asked her when she was going to move to one story. She fell and broke her wrist and called me and said she should have listened to me.
@maggiemae Oh we haven’t heard that here Maggie...we are all fed up & beginning to rebel....they are just making it up as they go on. Show us scientific charts that aren’t correct, we can’t make head nor tail of it now. Just had a FB post showing the cars parked on the main road as the massive garden centre car park is full.....I shan’t be going be there!
@joansmor Yes some small shops in Garstang are posting stuff on FB & will post it out but it’s hard work for them. I have no objection to the lockdown as long as it’s fair for all.
@louannwarren Some friends of ours are in a pickle too, husband in hospital as he seems to have lost the use if his legs....she with bad heart & high BP with worry....no facilities down stairs even though they only downsized two year ago...wrong choice!
Covid cases still rising here apparently so even lockdown isn’t working!
It seems to have moved down to a younger group now so it’s changing all the time.
What a mess the world is in. I suppose the UK has suffered more than we have in Australia because of the close proximity of people. I couldn't believe after the last lockdown that the UK was letting people go on holiday to Spain and France etc and letting them back into the UK without a 2 week quarantine period. Nobody is coming into Australia without quarantine especially after the debacle in Victoria. Unfortunately, it only takes one case to set the whole Covid thing off again. I do hope the number of cases reduces this time, enough for you to have a reasonably comfortable Christmas.
So many terrible effects from the virus. Now we have had a key person in our condo building test positive. A very stressful 14 days ahead as we wait to learn if there is any spread. Such a frightening time with so many no-wins now and more to come.
I like your photo and totally understand the frustrations for some businesses at the moment. The book you are reading sounds quite fascinating. I must keep a note of it for a future read.
@onewing This is the thing Babs...I’m not against the lockdown but it’s neither one nor the other....I couldn’t believe how lax that was at airports either. Of course we are a sort of stop off place on the flying run but it was infuriating. I expect the airlines thought different...we all have our own theories ..too many experts ...me included ha ha !
@taffy Now that is worrying Taffy...I think if you actually knew someone with this virus you would feel a whole lot different! Fingers crossed all are OK.
Totally get the frustration ; in the Netherlands No shops and schools are closed during this second lockdown. Not going to read that book, I think ; it only took 1 step to break both ankles last year, coming too close for comfort I’m afraid ...
@jamibann I’m half way through now & it’s quite fascinating! What a wonderful place these spinal units are & such dedicated staff.....there are some tough quirky characters in the staff there too.
I would be quite happy to sit in my chair all day reading but I know just by reading this we have to keep moving!!
Interesting protest and a nice shot!
I was reading about Barton Grange this morning on Blog Preston. People have been parking on the A6 apparently as the car park was full!! that is just crazy. (car parking had been reduced)
@obsidian I read that too Al...they have reduced the car parking I know but it’s not somewhere I would think about going to on a weekend anyway at the moment!

Our Covid cases are on the rise in LA also and small stores suffering. What a heart-wrenching year it’s been.
