Darling Mabel. by happypat

Darling Mabel.

A darling Mabel is something we Lancashire folk call something made from left over pastry.
This is filled with sultanas , a little butter & brown sugar.

I am ashamed to say that I had a senior moment this morning & actually had to look up the ratio of fat to flour in the pastry recipe....shows how long it is since I made it!
So many Bramley apples to use up I had to do something with them even though I shouldn't eat pastry....it gives me terrible indigestion.
Looks delicious!

Well, that's interesting as my mother used to put sultanas, currants etc in pastry but never called them anything - that was in Suffolk.

Had to look up Sultanas- ooo I love those - my favorite kind. They wouldn't last long enough to put in a pastry!

Over here at our home in the colonies, they are called Jim's treats. Whenever Peg makes a pie, I am her *sous chef* (which any of the menial tasks that need performing, are decreed to be in my domain. Peg always takes the leftover pie crust and fills it with some type of fruit, then presents it to me , after my tasks are completed. Great shot and looks delicious. What is the yellow topping on the pie?

@jimmyveee It's melted butter James....I spread the butter on too soon & it broke the top, I should have waited til it was cooler. Sounds like a team effort in your house!

@beryl Melted butter on the top Beryl.....I have heard of other names for these left over pastry bits but can't just remember any of them at the moment.

@happypat It looks delicious. You are correct, it is a team effort and I enjoy it tremendously. I think Peg does also.

Don't feel bad Pat, it happens. I used to do a lot of cooking and baking some years back, but I was never able to bake from memory. My Grandmother had it down to an art. I have her old cook book with her recipes, and she has no amounts written down, just the ingredients, so it doesn't do me much good.

Looks delicious - I've never heard of special things being made with left-over bits of pastry (I always shove them in the fridge in cling-film and hope they'll last till next time!) - but then I am from the profligate south!

I've never heard of this before but it sounds delicious. I usually make jam tarts with the leftover pastry but I might try this next time.

Looks delicious! Too bad all the good things in life are fattening, expensive - or gives us heartburn?
