I thought I saw a caterpillar .. by helenhall

I thought I saw a caterpillar ..

.. but I saw a sawfly lava. Would you have known the difference?

Distinct from caterpillars due to a head with two eyes - (and yes they are looking at you) - instead of twelve, and more than five pairs of pro-legs, this lava is in its final stage before becoming a Dogwood sawfly.

I came upon the lava on the edge of the riverbank today and had to bend the leaf over somewhat so as not to risk slipping into the river myself. This resulted in me holding the leaf with one hand and the camera with the other -not the steadiest of arrangements. Some of the more endearing shots are not quite focussed, this one being the clearest. Today I chose clarity over composition because I find those suction pads and the wrinkly lava skin (?) so fascinating. It bugs me though, that I can't have both.
Fabulous shot and interesting narrative too.
When we were on our walk in bushland a couple of days ago trying to take photos of wildflowers, a friend told me that she always carries a peg with her when taking photos in the bush so that she can peg the plants etc to something solid while she takes the photo. May have to keep a peg in my camera bag just in case.

Very graphic, well worth risking a slide into the river.

Those suction pads are fantastic Helen and I have never heard of sawfly lava so I've learnt something new today. The detail is fantastic.

Sooo very beautiful, I fav'd it instantly as I just find it amazing. What a shot. The beautifully patterned skin is awesome indeed, as well as those little suction pads and I'm sorry - his FUZZY little head!!! He is just so cute, this is the perfect pose you captured him in. That little black eye? I can't even... :)
