shrouded in mystery

So I discovered at the weekend that my camera is not worth repairing, I picked it up from the repair shop and it was all I had for photography over my weekend in Yorkshire. I didn't let it deter me, but you might understand that it is a bit of a struggle when the mystery view above is all the guide available to frame the shot.

What's more, since the only way of knowing the settings it to read from menus on the screen, this is becoming increasingly difficult.

Time for a new camera.
The wife of the man in the repair shop took time to dissuade me from merely taking the next grade up in replacing my beloved Panasonic tz40 and recommended a Compact System Camera. All the advanatages of lightweight system but with the scope for additional lenses etc. She suggested getting a refurbished Fuji xE2.

Any views out there? My primary requirement at the moment, is for something that I will be happy to carry everywhere I go. (and my handbag is not very big - the woman in the shop said - get a bigger one! ).
it is a bit of a wrench when the camera you know dies! i have heard good things about fuji but you might want to start a general discussion to bring out the techno junkies for more learned opinions

Too bad about your camera. I agree with the woman in the shop - get a bigger bag. The mirrorless cameras seem like a great way to go if you don't want a larger camera, but also want some quality with interchangeable lenses.

Shame about your camera. If you still want to stick with a compact camera and not go into the bigger ones or dslr's maybe a Lumix TZ70 could be on the cards it is a later version of your dead one I think.

My very good friend Jane @chimfa and one time neighbour when we both lived in the UK has recently purchased one.

Like you I don't think she wants to carry around a heavy camera and I think she is quite pleased with her purchase.

I'm so sorry to hear about your camera. It just so happens we have a fellow from Olympus coming to our camera club tomorrow night to talk about mirror-less cameras. I'm not in the market for one, but I'll keep you in mind as far as the information goes. Actually I have an Olympus point and shoot that I really like. It's a great camera to carry around for those unexpected shots.

Babs is correct. I'm really pleased with the LUMIX TZ70. I have a friend here in Spain who has one too. I'm still finding my way around it but it has some excellent functions and , important for me, is compact. If I had to carry a separate camera bag with me I know I wouldn't take it most of the time.

My best camera is a system (mirrorless) camera (Panasonic Lumix G6). I'm quite happy with it, but if you want to take your camera everywhere, probably with an extra lens, you definitely need a bigger handbag. Maybe a good compact camera would be the better choice for you, their quality is very good nowadays.

@moonmtn it is a difficult decision, but thank you for your contribution to my debate. Much appreciated
@onewing @chimfa Thank you both, Babs and Jane, for your views. I had picked the TZ70 as my choice before the professional spoke to me. This one is a step up in two important areas for me - firstly it captures in RAW, and secondly it has a viewfinder. Still considering it.
@olivetreeann Beginning to think I need both the compact and the mirrorless.
@wenser Thank you for your help. I value your op;inion, alongside everyone elses.

@helenhall We were able to look at the Olympus EM series (I think that's the name) and most of the lenses you can buy for it. It was very affordable compared to names like Nikon and Sony. They are incredibly light weight! And they are smaller than most dslr's but they aren't as compact as some p & s cameras. And nowadays- some of the p & s have some great features. I really like mine and it takes wonderful macros as well as landscapes. There are some fun in-camera editing features too. It's really up to what will give you the most bang for your buck so to speak.
