The front runners

Popped down the end of our street this morning to say hello to a colleague who was doing the 10k charity race. Her strategy was to go right to the very back of the 1000 runners to be away from the crowds. Here at the starting line though, I was amused at the different expressions and actions whilst preparing for take off.

Can you guess from these guys at the front of the runners, who will finish first?

774 or 955 - grim determination!

they do look focussed

The guy in the wheelchair has a rather determined look on his face. The girl really means business but the guy with his head in his hand doesn't look too confident.

All those different expressions -- great candid!

The guy in the orange singlet that is setting his watch! A great image of them all.

Glad to see the Ambulance there, I would definitely need that if I attempted to run 10 k!

774 looks so serious.....he must be concentrating really hard......I'd bet on him.

Yes, a great range of body language and expressions Helen. I'm really wondering what's going through the mind of the guy with his head in his hands.

The wheelchair contestant

@sugarmuser you guessed well. He came 2nd overall. The winner doesn't appear at the front here.

@fbailey they both did pretty well. 774 came 4th and 955 came 9th

@onewing Ah the guy with his head in his hands came second overall, so he was obviously sorting his head out ahead of the race. Cant find the position of the wheelchair contestant - but not in the top 50 as Ive looked through all the photos. The girl came 14th (second place amongst the women).

@kjarn @dide I've tracked him down in the photo gallery, and he came in at 10th place overall.

@hazydaze well you were close - he came in 4th overall - 446 did better at 2nd place.

@flowerfairyann whatever it was, it seemed to do the trick. He came second - the winner isn't in the photo and broke a race record.

thanks everyone for playing along. In addition to the above information, I have discerned that the chap with his arms over his head came in 13th and the relaxed dude on the right with the tattoo came in 15th place. The chap in a blue top alongside him on the right, came in at number 40. Now, I've spent enough time on that - especially as I have no interest in running. My friend finished towards the back but was happy with her time and the money raised for the local hospice and cancer care.

Super capture showing all of the interesting expressions, and it was fun reading all the comments about placement! Anddd...how wonderful of your friend to raise money for local hospice and cancer care!

@helenhall he just looks really fit

@helenhall Maybe the chap with his head in his hand was praying, it seemed to have done the trick, ha ha.
Thanks for showing such an interesting photo, so much to look at here.

#440. He is focusing without the distractions of everything around him. Interesting photo looking at everyone’s expressions. Do you know who won?

@moonmtn see above comments. Hes the winner of those on the photo ... came in second.

The guy in the wheelchair because the gloves are his secret weapen ;) Lovely expressions shot!

So much nervousness on display make this such an amusing study! Not sure about the benefits of stretching cold muscles. No doubt they are each going through their own psychological preparations! I always liked to start at the back because of the reassuring feeling that comes from overtaking so many others! I never won, of course, but always enjoyed the experience
