Bishop Chase, the first Archbishop of Illinois liked things plain and evidently his word was law!
He and his wife are buried here in the church cemetery.
Beautiful little church it seems to be quite old. I do like the winndows.

I think he felt the less distractions the more you were focused on God. He may have been on to something- the simplicity here is quite beautiful.

I believe the cornerstone was laid in 1839 or 1840. Old for Illinois.
