As a belated birthday treat for dad, I took him over to visit Craigellachie and the new Macallan distillery. It's on the same site as the old one, but is a very modern, spacious, light and airy building. He had a wee whisky tasting whilst he was there. It would have been rude not to!
Indeed it would! Super shot. I absolutely love those little whisky glasses. When we went to Dalwhinnie, we brought home some wee glasses like that. Love tasting from them! Glad you got to bring your Dad out for a treat :)
@sarah19 Oh, you must! It's worth it just to see the building. If you want to do an organised tour however, book ahead. And if you do go, I'd recommend the Cooperage too - just a couple of miles away. Again, book ahead though - and it's only open on weekdays.
@jamibann thank you Issi, Allan has been to the Cooperage with a friend from Sweden some years ago but good to get your suggestion to book ahead. When we moved to Oldmeldrum in 1984 there was still a Cooperage at Glengarioch Distillery just beside our house. They did the whole process on site with a 24/7 team of workers. Now much of it is outsourced but they have developed the building where the Cooperage was into an attractive and busy little visitor centre.
@sarah19 You mention Glengarioch Distillery ... I had totally forgotten about that one. I used to visit it often, back in the day, when I worked for Total Oil Marine (now Total E&P UK). I accompanied visitors (mostly French) to Total's Offshore Platforms and the Terminal at St. Fergus, and if those visitors stayed over the weekend, Glengarioch was a favourite destination for us - and Meldrum House for dinner. I can still remember the menus. I picked the same every time, practically. Smoked salmon, rack of lamb and sticky toffee pudding! The French loved all of it, as you might imagine! Ah, brings back memories of life before children, never mind before retirement. Where does time go? Seems like yesterday!
