I have been getting back into shape after illness/surgeries and weight gain (from the former).
My mission this summer was to make it to Panorama Point on Mt Rainier - elevation 6800 ft - a 1700 elevation gain in two miles. Part of it was icy/snowy, and very rugged.
I didn't plan to make it today. It was our anniversary and I thought we may go on a shorter hike. Every time we talked about turning around, I looked at the peak and we kept on plugging.
Anyway - I am pretty proud of this hike/climb.
This was part of the view - you can see Mt Adams in Oregon to the right at the top.
Part of the climb - rugged terrain here: http://365project.org/jankoos/where-i-live/2013-09-01
Congratulations on your accomplishment, Jan! That is fantastic. From the looks of your amazing mountain photos this summer, you have been a dedicated hiker. You must be in fabulous shape! This is another wonderful view. You are lucky to have such beautiful scenery close by.
@pflaume - thanks Lisa. I am actually not in very good shape yet - but working on it. :) I do so appreciate the beauty of this area. I miss living in Seattle for the cultural aspects and amazing restaurants, but whenever I think I want to move closer to civilization, I just have to go to Mt Rainier to remind me why we moved here.
I'm sitting here feeling very lazy and unfit there is no way I could do that climb at the moment but I'm determined to get fitter. You have inspired me! Fabulous view so worth the climb Jan.
@paulaw - thanks so much, Paula. You can do it with the fitness! I struggle with it - but I have chronic pain from cancer (13 surgeries). I have (hopefully) shaken the cancer but getting back to a level of fitness I had before has been very hard for me. I used to be very slender and now I'm chubby (hopefully temporary) and that doesn't help. However, I have decided one step at a time. It's easier for me to walk an incline than a level surface - so we seek the higher altitude hikes. By the time I hurt, we are walking back downhill and that takes less time - LOL.
I am so pleased you have achieved your goal - congratulations. Having read about your fight with cancer and your recovery which has taken you to the top of a mountain I am blown away! What an inspiration you are Jan! And when you got to Panarama Point what a stunning view you captured! I would have been crying at this point! Happy Anniversary and well done! What a star! Fav!
@dakotaburns@nanalisarocks - thanks Donald and Lisa - it was a fun hike/climb. @pamknowler - thanks so much, Pam. Your words are very kind. I hope in some way I can encourage others who have survived cancer that there is life after all is said and done. I get a lot of scans - peace of mind. Panorama Point is a peak - 6800 foot level of a 14, 411 ft mountain. I will never get to the top - one has to be extremely fit and train for that, and I am not into climbing rockface, but I do hope to make it to Camp Muir (basecamp) at over 9,000 ft the summer after next. Thanks again for the encouragement. It means a lot.
Wonderful panorama Jan, and so glad to hear you are feeling much fitter! @pamknowler said it all really. A wonderful way to spend an anniversary and congratulations on achieving everything you have and beating cancer! Awesome :)))
The picture looks so faded here - but it doesn't on my laptop. Hmmmm.....
