the donkey sanctuary come here four times a year to check that the donkeys I foster from them are being properly looked after. On Tuesday I have my big annual inspection, so I spent most of the day today tidying the field, stables and yard.
At one point when I was at the top of our field I looked over and saw that Angus, who is one of the old (nearly 30) donkeys having a lie down in the sun. I decided to see if I could get near to him to give him a stroke.
Because they are at their most vulnerable when lying down they usually stand up as soon as you approach, but today was different. I managed to sit down next to him, and the other old boy (Joey Boy) came and joined us. After a while Angus put his head on my legs and fell fast asleep. Joey looks like he is eating the grass, but he is asleep too.
It was quite a special half an hour, not only because it will probably never happen again, but mainly because just before Christmas Angus was very ill and nearly died. He pulled through against the odds.
So sweet, we have feral donkeys near my house that get supplemental food from a local fan. I've had to stop several times to let them amble across the road in the early morning hours. Great moment and capture. You've obviously earned their trust.
