As I said in an earlier post, the young pigs have been let out into the big field because their enclosures are about six inches deep in liquid mud. They love wet mud when the weather is hot, but it is not so good for them when the weather is cold and there is no dryer land to stand on. So, this shot is a bit of a diary entry for me so I can see how long it takes 17 five month old piggies to turn two and half acres of nice green field into something resembling the Sommes.
I went up this morning to have a go at feeding them while Graham was there because I have been worried about them savaging me,. They were actually very well behaved. Hopefully this will continue when I am flying solo on Monday.
Thanks to everyone who commented on and faved my 'mudpig' shot yesterday, I was staggered by the response to it.
I remember how our pigs churned up a pen for us, upending all the weeds and bushes, it was great. But not the kind of thing you want for a beautiful, green field. It will be interesting to see how long it takes them to turn everything up. Congrats on your 1000th! I hope I make it that far!
So glad you weren't mown down Jan...they look like they have lots of grass so perhaps not as hungry as they would have been in their old enclosure. Will be very interesting to see how long it takes indeed....can't see any clods dug up much yet. We sometimes used to ring our outdoor pigs to stop them routing .
I can remember getting them into the farrowing crate & me standing above them with as rt of rope lasso to try & get it over their nose. Harry then used to tighten it so they couldn't move & then put the ring through their nose...not sure if that would be allowed today!!!!
They are lovely looking pigs. And at the mo a nice field! My dad always used to tell me stories about pigs eating farmers who had fallen over in fields - I never believed him as he had a good line in horror stories! Dare I ask when 'the big journey' is due or are you going to breed from more as they are rare? PS 1000 - Wahey!
