Talk about frustrating! I was in our kitchen yesterday and looked out of the glass doors to see that there were two green woodpeckers on the lawn. One was an adult and the other a baby. I knew that my camera was in another room and that if I moved to get it they would certainly fly away. Dilemma!
After watching them for some time during which the parent was feeding the baby, and a greater spotted woodpecker landed quite close to them and a beautiful thrush started bashing a snail on the wall about 8 feet from where I was sitting (no I am not making it up) I could stand it no longer and stealthily crept out of the kitchen to get the camera. I got a few shots of the young woodpecker through the glass but they are not particularly sharp.
When it flew into a tree I went outside and because it obviously felt well camouflaged enough to stay there I was able to get fairly close and get this shot.
Beautiful!! It was totally worth all of that work....and, I know the feeling of frustration when you don't just happen to have your camera in a holster around your waist, or slung across your shoulder when something like this happens!
Well you got it in the end....I always feel totally honoured by a visit from woodpeckers.......she must feel very secure in your garden to bring her baby!
