Pay phones are few and far between - we at least have one that has some links to the red boxes of the past - and it is free and even has a phone book. I can't say I've ever seen anyone use it. John is just posiing - he used to be a telephone technician many years ago.
I just posted a shot of a payphone location where it has been removed. The U.S. had a peak of 2+ million payphones. The current count is probaby fewer than 100,000 now. https://365project.org/rhoing/365/2022-02-24
@rhoing Thanks Thom. They are becoming a rare breed here in Australia too - although our Mapleton one is still standing. As just about everyone has a mobile phone usage has well and truly dropped off, but they are now free and kept for emergencies, the homeless and victims of domestic violence. There are still 15,000 of them which is about half the number there were 20 years ago.
