Hang on, Snoopy. by jesika2

Hang on, Snoopy.

Angle Shades caterpillar
found on a Peace Rose in my tiny jungle. It's now got Birdsfoot Trefoil, Scabious and Knapweed leaves, a much better dietary choice.
Notice it's clinging to the twig by the cremaster, that's the forked bit at the bottom of it's body.

that's amazing how it is holding on

@koalagardens thanks. Some species use the cremaster as an anchor when they pupate. This one will go underground.

A bit unusual isn’t it to find one this time of the year ?

@markp no, it isn’t. Lepidoptera species over winter as eggs, larvae, pupae and in Britain 5 species of butterfly hibernate as adults and several species of moth are on the wing.

@jesika2 Oh, yes I know that some butterflies hibernate and that other survive the winter as eggs, larvae and pupae. I really, meant to say isn't it unusual to find one active ?
I have found butterflies hibernating, as well as eggs, larvae and pupae hidden away safely. I don't ever seem to remember finding a caterpillar out eating during the winter.

@markp sorry, I misunderstood. I don’t find many caterpillars but a friend a few doors away seems to be a caterpillar seeker. She’s found several this winter, I think I’ve found 2. I suppose they’ve got to eat and I expect that those roaming around in winter are general feeders. Mrs Brimstone’s babies certainly wouldn’t do very well, would they!
