I took a hike on our fire road to try to wake myself after a long day of travel yesterday and only four hours of sleep and found 6 trees down. Luckily no need to get out our fire road this time of year. And they will make good firewood. These trees are not used to getting 6-8 inches of heavy wet snow as they did on monday night. The electric company is still working on getting us power again. Before next winter we need to buy a generator for sure. Cayenne was impressed with this one!
It was a blustery day to get home but welcome back! A lot of trees came down with that snow. I could hear them cracking and falling as I stood on my deck the night of the storm.
She looks a bit phased!! What's your fire road - is that an alternative emergency route? And all that snow has gone as well - how frustrating - all that damage for nothing really!
@judithg yes, it is an alternate exit if there were a fire here in the summer. Our driveway is 1/2 mile long and if there were a fire below, it would be likely to travel up towards us and block our exit. Yea, it was a bit sad to miss seeing the snow though I am sure glad for those days in Hawaii swimming!!!
@changingtides well, we do have thousands of trees...alder grow like weeds here and we've planted a lot of fir, cedar, hemlock, and spruce and you are right, we will use the wood for heat (that is our heat source). Only a problem in that well need to clear the fire road before dry season and that big root wad may be a bit of a bear to deal with.
