First of all, thanks to all for your support and suggestions and favs these last few days. They mean so much to me. I got a new lens! I've been driving past this osprey nest every week for ages looking up and seeing the head of what I assumed was an osprey. Imagine my surprise when I stopped on the way home from work last night and took some shots only to find that it is a Canadian Goose. Looks like she's got her feathers ruffled as if to say "don't you dare. This is my nest!" I read that they have their nests on the ground. I wonder what will happen to any babies. This is probably 30' off the ground at least. I couldn't believe how well this turned out given I didn't have my camera on a tripod, the light wasn't the greatest, and I was across the road from the nest with cars roaring by making the road shake.
@judithg I totally agree. On the other hand, do you know that wood ducks have to be thrown (I think their nests ae 50' or more up) out of the nest and fall clunk on the ground in order to survive! Sure glad we don't have to do that with our kids. Though I remember some moments that I was sorely tempted!
@jgpittenger LOL!! That's amazing! I hope the wood ducks have a soft landing. I know some birds change their nesting habits - we have some cormorant colonies that nest in trees (normally only the European varieties do that) but I'm pretty sure that it's quite a while before geese can fly.
I have never seen a Canada goose with a nest up in the air like this, she must be confused !!! Poor little chicks she will have to watch they don't fall out of bed !
this is fab! I'm surprised this goose got away with it! Perhaps it's had eggs stolen in the past and has decided to change it's nesting habits!! look forward to seeing the goose story unfolding!!
