aurora borealis? by jgpittenger

aurora borealis?

Could this be? We were sitting in the hot tub last night and saw something we'd never seen before. It kind of looked like a cloud but it had color in it and was kind of sparkly. This is hand held and really high ISO cause my tripod is packed. ANd the moon was pretty bright nearby. What do you think? Especially those familiar with the aurora borealis
That looks like what we saw in Iceland - it looked like cloud trails but as you got used to it you saw the pattern changing. The only thing which makes me wonder is that it usually comes up green on photos. Fantastic if you got colour in it to the eye though.

There is a hint of unusual colour. Amazing sky whatever it is! Viewed from the hot tub. What a terrible life...

I have only ever seen the aurora borealis on the TV but the colours were the same, a sort of warm glow...did it move across the sky? Very exciting ...I would say it was that anyway Jane !!!!!

Are you sure it's not that stray meteor?! Hope it didn't disturb your relaxing!

@judithg Well, it did get me out to fetch my camera but I didn't go to the effort to dig my tripod out of my duffel bag stuffed in my wet suit

I saw the Aurora Australis once, 25ish years ago, greens and pinks across the sky. It did look a bit like this.

I've only seen the Australia and it lit up the lower sky rather than being a line so I don't know...pretty cool whatever it is

Great capture of the stars and whatever this is. I saw the auraura borealis once and it did not look like this but I was in Winnipeg at the time.

Did you see it making waves or dancing? If you did then it would be.

@pamfromcalgary waves for sure
February 19th, 2013
@jgpittenger It probably was then. It is an awesome sight!

Great shot and documentation. Good thing to have a camera at hand at all times!!

It doesn't resemble an aurora borealis that I've seen, but that means absolutely nothing. Could be.

What ever it is it looks really cool. Could it be a contrail?
February 19th, 2013
I see some ripples in there, almost like a layer between the camera and the wide strip of "cloud," that I've never (or noticed) seen before. I think you saw them, that's so cool!

Very cool, but I'm going to agree with @nbs I think it's a jet contrail.
