I was out Wednesday which was a fairly warm day and no snow. I went over to #1 pond and then down through the mill yard trying to capture a few outdoor pictures. These street lights have captured my attention every time I go but have not been able to get them into a photo in a way I like So thinking maybe the snow piles and lack of leaves on the trees would work I started shooting only to have this man ride into the frame. So of course I snapped. Think this is better than any of the others I've taken, but not quite there. We got about 5 or 6 more inches today and lots of little storms in the forecast. Any suggestions on how I get a better picture of these lamps in a line would be appreciated.
@jborrases Nice weather all the time would be boring. Complaining about the winter weather is something we feel our right in Maine. But I wouldn't live anywhere else.
What a great shot...super pop of orange on this fellow. Brave to venture out on the slushy slippery road. Nice lines and colors I love the street lights in the shot...adds a vintage feel to the pic.
I like your orange-clad photo bomber! I also like the repetition of the street lamps. They might look really nice at the blue hour- just after they come on. You may want to wait for warmer weather to catch that!
Personally, I think you've got an exc ellent composition with the lamps "curving" through the image. The lines on the road and the man on the bike give a nice sense of curvature. I use Photoshop & have recently discovered the "Crop tool" that gives several layouts besides the rule of 3rds. I'm not sure how this would lay, but it reminds me of the spiral... I like it!
I do love winter landscapes with snow. The man adds to the shot too. The only thing I can think of to make it better would be to shoot them at night, so they are lit up.
I like the way the lights angle down towards the curve of the road. But yes, it's the cyclist who is the picture. I knew people Maine were another breed, but seriously, biking in the snow????
I coomented on this right after you posted but it's disappeared! What I suggested, if the road layout permits, is that you photograph these lights from a position almost in line with the lights so that each one is offset a little. Use your 70-300 at 300mm to compress the view and, yes, try a blue hour shot at the stage of nightfall when the brightness of the scene and the brightness of the lights is at the same EV.
@vignouse I have tried that in better weather and too miuch distraction, so I think the one with lights will be worth the try when it warms up. Not getting above freezing for the next 10 days and snow starting tomorrow and lasting through Tuesday morning. UGH good time to try my bw macro abstract. Got abstract , got bw but not macro. Oh well, more experimenting.
I saw this in AZ but as I was on my iPhone, I wanted to get a better view. I love the curve in the road with the yellow lines and the biker with the bright orange jacket. I see you have expert advice on the light posts. :) Hope you are staying warm!
I really like it as is Joan, the cyclist is fabulous! I love the lights though and I wondered if you could move just a bit to the left so we could see more of the curve of the road and have those lights just a little more lined up?
