The before

I thought if I posted the original un enhanced shot to go with the posting I processed in my main album you could see were my processing was coming from. So if you don't want to comment it is okay. This is the link to the processed picture. http://365project.org/joansmor/365/2016-01-05
@northy this is for you to see where I started and if my mentor @vignouse drops by then that would be good too.

this photo looks fantastic itself and your postprocessing have made it briliant

i really like how the b&w conversion pulled the detail out of the trees... nicely done!

@joansmor @northy. I saw this one first and said to myself, "This needs to be in B&W.", so I wasn't surprised by your chosen treatment. I'll make my observations on the processed version here or else your 'fan club' will be after my blood. The image itself is a good example of a work(wo)manlike approach to producing competent images. My comment is rather about the Nik suite of programmes: there is a powerful amount of pixel manipulation going on behind the scenes that can, and often does, introduce quite high noise levels. If you've already processed in LR before editing in the Nik suite, then that noise will be exacerbated.

Here's what I do: I edit my image, including B&W conversion in LR; if I feel that there's more to be had from the image, I make a virtual copy, remove all adjustments (including the conversion) and then export that to the Nik suite. Once I'm happy that there are no more 'improvements' to be made in Nik, I export back to LR and apply any fine tuning that I consider necessary. This approach minimises noise ingress. My final step is to compare the pure LR image to the Nik one: surprisingly, perhaps, 50% of the time I go with the straight LR image. YMMD.

@vignouse I was not processing first and going straight to Silver Efex and then I started processing in lr. Well, I have noticed that noice and it required me to reprocess in LR to get rid or reduce the noise. So thanks because I like the Nik programs and am going to treat myself tomorrow if I can buy it with the small bonus I got from my job. It's fun to have a new program to play with. I seem to have a think lately for capturing reflections. What I would like is there something I could have done with my settings to maybe get just a little better picture to start. I believe I have a light nd filter because as you can see it was getting close to noon.

@vignouse @joansmor hmmm... interesting... i always process in LR first and then take it into silver fx... and yes, some of the presets introduce more noise than others, but i find that easy enough to fix in LR... i'll have to try doing the silver fx thing first at some point... i HAVE tried using LR b&w conversion and still do use it occasionally when i'm feeling lazy, or when the image is already practically b&w anyway (lots of my chess images, for example), but i've generally been happier with silver fx... anyway - tx for the food for thought!

@francoise Sometimes when Richard tries to do a teaching for me my friends attack him not understanding we have a mentor relationship. I am thinking he thought this was in my private album that I have limited access to as often it is just snaps. And sometimes I put picture a contrasting picture. I would add you if you want to be bored by my snaps.
