We have a wood stove in our home where two black swifts were unfortunately recently trapped after they flew down the chimney.
When we first heard scratching inside the stove we thought that it was a mouse. I went out and bought a few have a heart traps which we loaded with peanut butter and crackers. We did eventually called a Pest professional.for help as it wasn't a mouse after all. The technician was able to see that it was a bird not a mouse and was able to gently capture it and bring it outside. The little bird had been in the stove about 2 days and was terrified and dehydrated . So sad to say that it didn't make it. We also found out that there isn't a cap on the chimney and would need to contract a chimney professional about replacing the cap.
We had assumed that there we wouldn't have any more issues. Well, we all know what that word really means and yesterday there was another little bird who flew into the stove. This time, I got water and birdseed in little dishes for it. This morning, I grabbed my portable LED light to give me a little light so that I could reach in the stove and capture our newest little guest. I was able to and gently took it to the backdoor with the intention of placing it on a tree branch but he/she was able to fly out of my hand and away to freedom.
The chimney people come next week so I am praying that no more rescues will have to be made.
I am not sure if they were black swifts but I think so.
No need to comment, this is just a day in the life shot.
So far we have only had one bird come down the chimney. Although, with a window open so that the cats can go outside to their enclosed "play yard", we have had one bird fly loose in the house, so far. Still haven't figured out how the birds get in/out of the cat yard.
Glad that you were able to figure out what was making the noises and that you were able to save one of them. I hope you do not have any more visitors before the chimney people arrive.
@byrdlip@marlboromaam@joansmor@jo38 Thank you so much. I hope that the word gets around about the chimney trap but I will have a better idea of what to do going forward
So glad you were able to save the second bird. Good thinking to put out seed and water. I didn't think of that when we had birds in our chimney a long time ago. We had a sort of screen installed (don't know if that is what a chimney cap is) and it solved the problem.
We had an owl in our chimney of our open fire place in our house. About 20 cm high. We were able to give him/her a save exit. Such events are always exiting.
