My Mother taught me to look at historical markers when I can. I have walked by this one a few times but yesterday took the time to examine it. I am glad that I did as I learned something interesting about this spot in the MacDonald Dunn Forest which is one of my favorite areas to hike.
"Fred J. Schreiner was a 1927 graduate of Oregon State College (OSC). He
attended the University of Wisconsin before becoming an instructor (1928-1934)
in Forest Engineering at the OSC School of Forestry. He died unexpectedly
after a brief illness in 1934. The monument marks the location of a road
through the McDonald Forest that was surveyed by Schreiner and later built by
the C.C.C. in circa 1936. Two years after the road was constructed, it was
dedicated to his memory at the Arboretum Day celebration of the School of
Forestry. Schreiner Peak in the Mt. Hood National Forest was also dedicated to
him." ( OREGON INVENTORY OF HISTORIC PROPERTIES

@ludwigsdiana@robz@marlboromaam@kvphoto@corinnec@joansmor Thank you so kindly. This arboretum is managed by the College of Forestry and is a considered to be a working forest. I am just so happy that they have trails for us non-forest science types.
Thanks for the info!
@olivetreeann The CCC really did great work in this area. I admit to not really knowing about him before.
