My lesson for today- learn what an FL-D filter is. When I bought my new toy (Sony A6000) it was sold as a 'kit' with all sorts of goodies included. It came with a filter assortment, a UV, a polarizer, and a FL-D filter which is a purple color. I had not ever encountered such a beast before. My early days in photography were b&w film so I had no need to explore the color side of things back then. I went to YouTube and found out that the FL-D is primarily a filter used when shooting under/with florescent lights. I also learned that this filter can be used in b&w to add additional contrast. Now this bit was most interesting. I have gone 'dark' this year so to reacquaint myself with the fundamentals of composition in regards to contrast and shadow detail. I feel somewhat lucky that this was in my new kit. I will now will do some testing between the FL-D and the polarizer to see what nuances between the two.
I did try this show without the FL-D with the same camera settings and it was very blown out- ugly hi-key.
Hope that by adding a filter, I've not stepped outside of bounds with the nifty fifty challenge.
@octogenarian I will and thank you - I've got some older filters and need to play with them since I am going 'dark' this year. I want to make myself pay attention to the basics and classical way of doing things.

@lsquared Thank you so much.
